In part 1, we have seen the overview of claiming the miles for your travel, and these miles can be used for future travel. In this post, we will go through the several choices of claiming miles for travel with Etihad airlines.
As always, I would like to take an example and explain what you get for travelling with Etihad airlines. Let us take a scenario of a round trip between Chicago -> Mumbai in Economy Class (Booking Class L).
Etihad offers Frequent flier miles for travelling with them and Etihad lets you credit your miles to one of the 24 frequent flyer programs. We will go through some of the sweet spots with the miles you earn for travelling between Chicago and Mumbai.
The Frequent Flyer Program to select depends on various factors like travel profile, future travel needs, status with Frequent Flyer Program, Miles already accrued in a Frequent Flyer Program etc..
The below table summarizes the minimum number of miles you can earn by selecting any one of the program. The number of miles you can earn could be more if you have a status with that frequent flyer program.
We will analyze Etihad Guest Program to keep things simple.
What can you do with the miles you credit to Etihad guest program?
If you choose to deposit your miles to Etihad Guest program, you will earn a minimum of 8,498 miles for a round trip travel between Chicago and Mumbai. You can estimate the miles you can earn for other routes using the Mileage Calculator.
Etihad offers Family Membership, where you can pool all the miles earned across your family which provides greater flexibility while redeeming. you can create a Family Membership by nominating a family head and choose up to eight Family Guests to join you.
What can you do with the miles you earned?
Option 1: Redeeming for Travel in Etihad Airways
You can redeem these miles for your future travel with Etihad, The number of miles needed for an economy round trip award ticket from Chicago to Mumbai is 154,665 miles and $88.57 in taxes and fees. (219,250 miles and $88.57 for Business class). you can also book one way awards for half the amount of miles.
Option 2: Using for upgrades
If you already bought a Economy ticket, you can use your miles for upgrade to Business class. You would need 65,775 miles from Economy to Business class. You can even upgrade your family or friends with your miles.
Option 3: Additional Baggage
You can use your miles to purchase additional baggage. you need 19,444 miles to purchase 1 extra baggage between Chicago and Mumbai.
Option 4: Redeeming with Etihad Partners
American Airlines awards can be booked with Etihad guest miles and these award are based on this award chart, which shows the redemption rate between USA and India is 45,000 miles+ taxes/fees for an economy one way award ticket on American Airlines. However, American doesn’t operate flights to India, which makes it not possible to take advantage of this lower redemption levels (when compared to awards with Etihad Airlines)
Here are some possible uses of Etihad guest miles if you are looking to use them for AA flights
- Within US & Canada : 12,500 Etihad Guest miles for one-way economy award (excludes Hawaii)
- US to Hawaii: 22,500 Etihad Guest miles for one-way economy award (Economy peak)
- US to London: 30,000 Etihad Guest miles for one-way economy (Economy peak)
Taxes and fees vary from $20 – $30 depending on the rates at that time.
The next best option to redeem Etihad Guest miles is Jet Airways.
This can also be a good option if you only have a few miles and do not expect to earn any more miles in the near future.
Jet Airways is a partner with Etihad Airlines and you can redeem your Etihad guest miles for an award ticket with Jet airways. you can find how many miles are needed for a domestic award ticket (with in India) with Jet Airways using this chart and International award ticket with Jet Airways using this chart (India to an international destination)
Here are a few sweet spots in this award chart, if you have less than 9,000 Etihad guest miles. All miles shown are for a One-way Economy ticket with Jet airways. You will have to pay Taxes and fees on top of the miles. Taxes and fees vary between INR 500 – 2500 approximately for a one way ticket.
Things to Know :
- You have to book the Partner award tickets by calling Etihad call center, and there is no telephone booking fee since these awards are not available online
- Etihad Guest miles expire after 3 years from the day they are earned.
- You have to book at least 14 days in advance
- If your plans change, you may have to pay a fee for a date change /cancellations
- Award tickets are subject to availability.
- Check the cost of the ticket with Jet Airways before redeeming, and decide what is comfortable for you (purchase a ticket/Redeem miles)
- Etihad Guest miles expire 2 years from the date of activity, if you have a status with Etihad Guest program, you could get another 6 months to 1 year to use your miles.
If you are short of a Etihad miles or boost your Etihad guest miles balance, you can check these options for more miles or you can apply Citi Thank you Premier Credit card and transfer your Thank you points to Etihad Guest Program.
If you have paid for your ticket with Etihad Airlines, do make sure to claim your miles. With the option of Family Membership, you can pool miles very quickly for redeeming something big or you can use these miles for domestic trips in India with Jet Airways and you can also use these miles and treat your family/friends by purchasing a ticket for them in India.
