Earlier, we mentioned in this post about our experience flying with Emirates on an Etihad ticket. you may have a lot of questions about how did we do it without paying the money for ticket
How did we grab a business class ticket with Etihad Airways?
Etihad airways is a partner with American Airlines. American Airlines frequent flyer program is called AAdvantage. you can redeem AAdvantage miles for travel with Etihad Airlines and you would need 67,500 miles for one-way business class award ticket from India to USA with Etihad Airways. Taxes and fees will be approximately $60.
We have gathered a lot of AAdvantage miles through several credit card sign up bonuses and promotions over the years which we redeemed for this ticket.
Can you also do it?
Absolutely, right now there are two credit offers that can help you get a business class award ticket from India to USA.
For a limited time, Citi bank is offering Citi/AAdvantage Platinum select MasterCard with a 50,000 miles and 2 Admirals club passes signup bonus after spending $3,000 in eligible purchases within the first 3 months of card membership.
with the sign up bonus itself, you can get a one way economy ticket from/to India or will get close to a one-way business class award.
You might have known that American Airlines and US Airways are in the process of completing the merger. As of today, both Airlines operate their own frequent flyer programs separately (AAdvantage and Dividend miles). However, in 2015, AAdvantage and Dividend miles are expected to merge and AAdvantage will be the combined frequent flyer program.
So, in mid 2015, your Dividend miles will be converted to AAdvantage miles.
Barclaycard offers US Airways Premier World MasterCard , this card will go away once the AA & Us Airways merger is complete and since this is a different product, it makes a great choice to accumulate a AAdvantage miles for future use. Right now, Barclaycard is offering 50,000 Dividend miles after first purchase as signup bonus. Note that this card comes with a $89 annual fee, which is not waived for the first year.
With just these 2 credit card signup bonuses, you could earn over 100,000 miles which is enough for one round trip award ticket in economy from/to India.
If you would like to use these miles for business class award ticket, you need another 35,000 miles (135,000 miles for round trip business class award ticket for Trans-Atlantic routes). you may consider applying for the American Express Starwood preferred credit card. This card currently offers up to 25,000 Starwood points as signup bonus. Starwood points can be transferred to American Airlines miles at a 1:1 ratio and you get 5,000 bonus miles for every 20,000 Starwood points transferred.
Things to Know:
- Everyone is not eligible for credit cards, banks would like to see credit history in good standing before approving you for credit cards.
- If you have a limited credit history, you may not be approved for some of the premium cards
- Travel credit cards comes with premium benefits and higher APR, these credit cards are not best choice if you are considering carrying balance.
- If you are planning on using 100,000 miles earned from these 2 credit card signup bonuses for one ticket, you will have to wait till the frequent flyer programs merge, which is expected in mid-2015.
You can book award ticket with American Airlines partners using AAdvantage miles. For travel from/to India, Etihad airways would be one of the best choice to redeem AAdvantage miles.
Right now, there are 2 credit card offers that can boost your AAdvantage miles balance over 100,000 miles, enough for a round trip award ticket in economy
