Are You Using Your Amex Extended Warranty Benefit?

We typically get a warranty of 1 year from the manufacturer, when you purchase a product like Camera, Laptop, Cell Phone etc..

For some reason, I feel companies are getting better at designing products that are just meeting their advertised warranty. I personally had experienced at least 2 product failures just after the initial warranty.

This can be mitigated if you purchase the product with a right credit card, I would recommend purchasing the products with American Express card for the extended warranty protection.

Here is the summary from the Amex website

What is Extended Warranty?

Extended Warranty is an embedded benefit of your Amex card Membership and requires no enrollment. It can provide up to one extra year added to an original U.S. manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less when you use your Card on new eligible purchases.

How it Works

  1. Make sure the item is one year or less outside the coverage of the original U.S. manufacturer’s warranty.
  2. File a claim online or over the phone at 1-800-225-3750. Claims should be filed as soon as possible after you identify that your item is defective.
  3. Provide copies of your original itemized store receipts, your Card record of purchase, and the original manufacturer’s warranty.
  4. Keep the defective item, in case you’re asked to return it to AMEX Assurance Company, and any other documents we may ask for to process your claim. Please keep a copy of the shipping statement, so we can reimburse you for the shipping cost.
  5. We will review your claim, which typically takes 7-14 business days. You can check the status of your claim anytime online or by calling 1-800-225-3750.
  6. If your claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement equal to the value of your defective item up to $10,000.

What if you used multiple cards to purchase the product?
Back in Nov 2014, I purchased a laptop from Office Depot with multiple cards (5 Amex cards and 1 visa card) to take advantage of the Amex offer $10 back on purchase of $50 more at  Office Depot.
Recently that laptop stopped working and I immediately filed an online claim with Amex Extended Warranty. With in a week, I got a call to verify some of the details of the claim. With in 2 days, I received a credit of $50 on all the 5 Amex cards I have used. As expected, I didn’t receive the credit for the amount charged to the visa card.

Conclusion:

Amex Extended warranty is a valuable benefit that is often over looked. You can extend the warranty of the product by an additional 1 year on top of the manufacturer’s warranty, provided the terms&conditions are met.

I always purchase valuable items with an Amex card due to the ease of the extended warranty process and the overall success rate.
