American Airlines has announced changes to its award chart effective Mar 22, 2016. With the new award chart, you will need more miles when you want to travel in business class/first Class (in most cases).
Here are a few awards that you may consider booking now:
Business Class/First Class awards between India and Australia/New Zealand.
One of the sweet spot in the current award chart is the business/first class awards between India and South Pacific. You just need 45,000 miles for one way business class award and 60,000 miles for a one way First Class award.
From March 22, 2016, one way business class award will cost you 80,000 miles and one way first class awards will cost you 100,000 miles.
You could fly Etihad, Qatar, Malaysian Airlines or Cathay Pacific for flying between India and Australia/New Zealand.
Etihad operates A380 to Sydney and is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the First Apartment for 14 hours at the expense of 60,000 AA miles.
2. Business class/First class awards between India and Europe.
Another sweet spot is business class/first class awards between India and Europe. 30,000 miles for one way business and 40,000 miles for one way first class.
From March 22, 2016, one way business class award will cost you 42,500 miles and one way first class awards will cost you 62,500 miles.
You could fly on A380 from Mumbai to London via Abu Dhabi. Qatar Airways also operates A380 from Doha to London. While British Airways is an option, you have to contend with fuel surcharges. But, Qatar Airways and Etihad provides an alternative with low taxes/fees when using AA miles.
3. First Class awards between India and USA.
Transatlantic First class awards between India and USA (48 states) will increase from 90,000 miles to 115,000 miles. It will be even more costly, if you are redeeming for a first class award to Alaska, Canada or Hawaii.
There are several options available, which includes Qatar, Etihad and British Airways.
4. Business/First Class awards on Cathay Pacific.
Per the current award chart, you could pay 85,000 miles for 2 business awards (USA to Hong Kong and Hong Kong to India) or 112,500 miles for 2 first class awards (USA to Hong Kong and Hong Kong to India)
The same awards would cost you 110,000 miles for business awards and 160,000 miles for first class awards.
How to Earn AA Miles?
- You can get 50,000 bonus AAdvantage miles through Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard, 50,000 AAdvantage miles with Citi Executive card and another 50,000 AAdvantage Miles with Citigold Checking account
AAdvantage award chart is changing on Mar 22, 2016. Many business/first class awards are going to be very expensive after the change.
Some of the awards that will be expensive includes business class/first awards between India and South Pacific, India and Europe etc. You may consider booking these awards before the AA miles devaluation.
